In Sport what is the definition of the fitness component Power and whats its definition?

For P.E coursework we have to write down all the fitness components and their defintions and And example a sport it would be used in..

I Have done all of them apart from power...

Can you help me?In Sport what is the definition of the fitness component Power and whats its definition? The textbook definition of 'power' is 'the ability to apply strength rapidly'. It's a combination of Strength and Speed.

In 'real world' activities, the answer's a bit more complicated.

Applying strength too quickly is often as much of a problem, as moving strongly but very slowly would be.

For example, in Rugby or Judo a player's change of direction needs to be synchronised with other actions (his own as well as those of the other players). When a player can adapt their movements in this way, their 'style' is often praised for being FLUID, rather than 'powerful'. But an equally strong player who can't co-ordinate their movements as well, will seem clumsy and weak because they are wasting energy instead of focussing it where it will be most effective.

Often, the term 'explosive power' is used, because the ability helps a player to jump higher or push harder. Plyometric training concentrates on improving the speed of muscular contractions, so that strength can be used powerfully.

A good example of this effect is the'dynamic', 'air', or 'marine' pressup, where a rapid movement throws the exerciser's body into the air, instead of just lifting it to arms-length as in a 'static' pressup.
