I am 24 and have been smoking since I was 14. I've always been fit enough and work out and smoking doesn't seem to effect me. I have given up for a while when I was in jail but started again when I got out. I'm thinking about joining the army if they will take me because of my record and am keeping up my fitness. If you are fit and young does smoking really effect your fitness? No, it does affect you, you're not immune to it's effects. I'll just address one of the many chemicals in a cigarette (or joint). When you burn them, you breathe in carbon monoxide. That carbon monoxide binds to your hemoglobin over oxygen. In other words, your blood cells will not absorb oxygen because the carbon monoxide was absorbed faster. So the amount of oxygen in your body goes down and cellular respiration has to take the anaerobic pathway (making energy without oxygen) and that creates lactic acid (makes your muscles feel sore) and alcohol, not to mention is very inefficient. If you are fit and young does smoking really effect your fitness?
Don't smoke. It may be seeming fine now but when you're older you'll die at age 60. Actually, because you're thinking about joining a war against a country (Afghanistan or Iraq) that had nothing to do with that one person asshole Bin-Laden (Saudi Arabian) then maybe your life isn't worth living through. Go on, get yourself killed. If you are fit and young does smoking really effect your fitness? It can do. I have a friend who smokes but is brilliant at basketball, and at the age of 17, he plays for our local under 21 team. It hasn't affected his fitness as much then, but I think if he carries on it will. Same with you. There is nothing good about smoking. It damages your health and your wallet. I'm sure you know all this, but I just wanted to tell you again, because your question sounds like, if it doesn't REALLY effect your fitness, you'll keep doing it just because it's not that bad.
IT'S insidious grip will continue, i'm a smoker(bad bad person) and over the years I've given up time after time. my health has slowly declined I've been smoking for 40 years it doesn't get any better. If you are fit and young does smoking really effect your fitness? What has your physician told you? And what is your family history?
