Does it surprise / worry you how uninformed the teens asking questions here are about fitness?

To the professionals or "normal" people into fitness. Does it surprise you how clueless the teens are about fitness here on these forums? I mean kids that are 14 or 15 even 16 asking questions that seem really obvious to me, I guess things you would learn in every day life or in phys ed or health class.

Whats up with that? And does it worry you or is it pretty much same old situation of the decline of our society?Does it surprise / worry you how uninformed the teens asking questions here are about fitness?lotta good answers already but I'll add my inputs/opinions. It used to surprise me but now I'm used to it. It definitely is frustrating and worries me sometimes. The more I've thought about it the more it makes sense though...few reasons why:

- misinformation: the 'health' and medical field has given a lot of bad or incorrect information over the years some of it by so called experts (i.e. low fat is the way to go).

- too much information: kids/teens these days here so MANY different ideas on what is healthy that they have no way to disguish fact from fiction anymore. one rule of thumb i use...does it get the results promised long term.

- laziness: I can't believe the number of questions that a simple GOOGLE search could find or looking at a food label. Like what is BMI? What foods contain protein? How much fat is in 10 wheat thins? And those are the 'good' ones :-)

- lack of caring: they do what they want, eat what they want, and then right before prom wanna drop 20-30 lbs. It's like come on...you need to plan your life to be healthy, NOT just when it's convenient

- celebs: they gear their life after these pop stars and a lot of these kids don't realize how much the stars struggle too. Look at Janet Jackson...know for her hot bod and those abs. Well she's gone through a few stages where she has been chunky or a little pudgy. No one has a perfect body (although if you're curious I can send a link to one that is pretty close :-)Does it surprise / worry you how uninformed the teens asking questions here are about fitness?
It does, but at the same time it doesn't. The quality of the "education" children receive today is rather appalling, especially when it comes to science and health education. The art of critical thinking is not being taught either; it an advertisement says it is so, then it is believed without a second thought.

Sad, really.Does it surprise / worry you how uninformed the teens asking questions here are about fitness? It doesn't SURPRISE me, but it is kind of worrisome. I'm 20 and the only reason I know so much about health and fitness is because I spent a lot of time looking into all of it on my own, because I wanted to know as much as I could, because I want to be as fit as I can. It's pretty common with teenagers and people my age that we only want to know about things we like, or are interested in. Actually, that's true with a lot of people. When most kids are in health class (or any class for that matter), they zone out. I did. I didn't give a crap and now I'm paying for it. The truth is, a lot of people still don't care, even after they get a lot older. I think that's just how human nature is. Some grow out of it, most don't. As far as these kids who aren't paying attention being America's future, well, yeah, I'm worried.

Edit: What the first person said is completely right. I know soooo many people who just take what they hear from their professors as solid truth, and don't even second guess it. That isn't good. My generation is going to end up being a generation that doesn't think for themselves, and that worries me also.
It doesn't surprise me at all but it does worry me. It doesn't surprise me because I'm in the gym and watch these idiots trying to hurt themselves and when you try to give them some advice they look at you like your stupid. Then they get hurt and act like its everyones fault but there own. what really scares me is the little girls who get on here nad ask how to lose 20 lbs in a week and there are vultures who will sell them anything.Does it surprise / worry you how uninformed the teens asking questions here are about fitness?idk. but i am a 14 year old girl and i am full of knowledge. a couple of times i was going to post a Q and then found i knew the answer.

i think it may be laziness for these teens.. bc i search the web all the time for info.. i hope this Q wasn't to try to put down any teens, at least they are trying to learn-even if they are completly obvious Qs(like: should i eat?)Does it surprise / worry you how uninformed the teens asking questions here are about fitness?
I think some of that must come from parents who don't really care about their health. I mean, is it just me or do there seem to be more obese people walking around these days. And I'm not talking about someone who's say 10-15 pounds over weight.
It breaks my heart, but then again I believed the "Standard American Diet" fallacy also for nearly 40 years til my health failed to the point of being desperate to find another answer. What upsets me more is the health care professionals that are so ill informed. I was in the hospital and requested a sugar free diet, they put me on a diabetics diet that was low fat and full of sugar (???)

I get a lot of flack for repeating the same info over %26amp; over again. I wish I could reach them all sigh. But it's always the same question being asked over %26amp; over again and the advice being given of lowering calories to 600 or less and living off fruit and vegetables. It just sounds so healthy, how could it be bad.

One young girl had been living off 1100 calories %26amp; doing 500 calories of exercise daily and hadn't lost weight in 4 months and only answer shared was lower calories more. I don't know how to convey better the permanence of a wrecked metabolism.

BUT this is the information age and things can shift dramatically. If you can teach one person and they teach 2 people, a revolution is possible!Does it surprise / worry you how uninformed the teens asking questions here are about fitness?
HEY!

Did my question you answered about fasting make you ask this?

I'm an uniformed teen that is trying desperatly to lose 10 pounds and when I first began to uhmmm..... I guess "diet"... I did it all wrong and basically destroyed my metabolism. The Internet has taught me alot, and I'm learning more through trial and error haha.

It doesn't surprise me, I'm just a regular teen who slept through health.. But even in health they didn't teach alot about weight loss or being fit..

What do you mean decline in our society? Like kids becoming dumber?

I think it's just the declining education system. I am totally raising my children in china.
